If you're looking for a restaurant serving the best of Portuguese and international cuisine, away from the hustle and bustle yet central and convenient, then look no further than Madeira Restaurante. It is located at the tail end of Churchill Way, in the heart of Cardiff city centre. The interior is a deceptively large tunnel of low wooden beams that can accommodate up to 90 guests, and the warm lighting will add cheer to any Welsh day.

The menu is vast and inventive, with a host of starters both hot and cold. Fish lovers will delight in the fresh catches on offer, from swordfish, monkfish, crab and squid to Portuguese specialities such as caldeira - a traditional fish broth. Worth ordering, not least for the spectacle of eating from a mediaeval meat hook suspended from the rafters, are the espetadas - Madeira's special kebabs. Equally magnificent are the steaks, weighing up to 16oz and served with a choice of mouth-watering regional sauces.

And that's not all. Madeira stocks a fabulous selection of Portuguese wines; try the Ramada for an award-winning red, or any of the other specialist bottles on offer.

Prices are reasonable, with a range to suit all wallets. Menu items start at £3.95 for a starter, £7.95 for a main course, and £3.95 for dessert. The Healthy Food Feast ranges from £26.95 to £31.75 for two people. But don't wait for a special occasion to try out Madeira - with the lunchtime menu offering a two-course prix fixé option for £5.95, it is the obvious choice for good, relaxed food at any time of day.
