In a city that has changed beyond recognition over the last few years, it is reassuring to find that old Cardiff institutions still exist, like rare nuggets of gold. Crumbs is one such place.

The fact that it has been open for 39 years shows that owner Judi is doing something very, very right. It's no surprise that Crumbs has a very loyal client base, including people who ate there as youngsters; they still come back with their own children to eat there now.

Crumbs serves up a fantastic array of hearty, well-balanced food, all of which can be eaten in or taken away. Everything on the menu is vegetarian or vegan, with dishes like vegetable curry, vegetable chilli and pasta Provençale available. There is also a handful of dairy and wheat-free dishes. The salad bowls (£5 to eat in and £2.70 take away) are brimming with fresh ingredients like boiled eggs, coleslaw, sweetcorn, brown rice and cottage cheese. Also on offer are jacket potatoes with a wide range of fillings and homemade soup served with huge slices of granary bread. Complement your meal with a freshly squeezed orange juice or a herbal tea, before finishing off with a fresh fruit salad.
