A good reputation precedes The Oak Barn Restaurant, and in reality it impresses with exceptional ease. This magnificent 18th-Century barn was resurrected and considerately extended six years ago to reveal exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces, with a minstrels' gallery added to the breathtaking dining room (which caters for parties up to 50). The overall effect supplies the ideal stage for enjoying some fine food.

Let the à la carte menu entice you with its superb quality - a mouth-watering medley of locally-sourced, seasonal 'English fare with a modern twist'. The menu works side by side with the comprehensive wine list, with something to complement and ease out the flavour of each and every dish. Succulent tiger prawns were a pleasant introduction to the skills of the chef, being both exceptionally cooked and beautifully presented. Homemade ravioli followed and was delicate on the outside revealing a perfectly balanced filling of ratatouille and rocket pesto. Sublime roasted rump of local lamb was a tender joy to devour - the thyme and garlic jus working in perfect harmony with the exquisitely cooked meat. For something less substantial, the bar menu offers a selection of tasty sandwiches and light meals, all accompanied by friendly, knowledgeable and extremely efficient service.

The Oak Barn had pre-empted my slightly gluttonous desire to sample every dessert on the menu by offering an 'assiette gourmande' - a sample of each dessert on one enticing plate. I enjoyed the cleansing sensation of orange soaked in Cointreau with freshly shredded mint, and consumed cheesecake and creme brûlée with worthy appreciation. A welcoming and comfortable ambience awaits within the rustic walls of The Oak Barn. Whether dining in the restaurant, having a snack in the bar or simply enjoying a fresh coffee, this eatery accommodates every valued customer, offering a dining experience of which I, for one, intend to take further advantage.
