Just a mile south of Brockenhurst, the inviting ambience of The Filly Inn awaits those in search of fine food and great drink in a wonderfully relaxed setting. This country hostelry, with a delightful mix of olde-worlde charm and lovely contemporary features, is a popular haunt for New Forest walkers, cyclists and local residents looking to quench their thirst or sample some hearty fare. The beautiful flagstoned bar is amply stocked with an impressive range of imported wines and beers, while the four chefs in the kitchen whip up a tasty array of traditional favourites and modern dishes.
When we visited, owner Ruth Cohen, who took charge of the pub’s refurbishment, welcomed us warmly. We immediately felt at home. Our only problem was choosing what to have from the varied menu – it all sounded so delicious. I began with Stilton-stuffed Portobello mushrooms (my absolute favourite) while my companion tucked into heart-warming creamy mushroom soup. Our next courses were even better: a generous serving of cod fillet filled with salmon mousse on a bacon cassoulet for me and a very enticing tender chicken breast with chorizo, spinach and sautéed potatoes for my dining partner. The team here know that fresh, local produce is best. That’s why Hampshire produce takes centre stage at The Filly Inn – and, if you ask me, you can really taste the difference. The selection of handmade desserts was oh-so tempting, but we didn’t quite have room.
After such satisfying fare, we would have loved to put our heads down in one of the five comfortable guest rooms upstairs – but that’s for another time, along with a delicious cream tea perhaps. This is also a great venue for functions, with a 35-seater room opening out to a spacious terrace available.
