Undertake the ten-minute drive from the city centre to The Kings Head and you will be well-rewarded. Although it’s a traditional inn through and through, you won’t just find classic pub fare on the menu; there’s also a whole section devoted to high-quality Caribbean cuisine. The Kings’ family team is dedicated to serving the community and regularly caters for parties and events. I started with salt fish fritters, which were subtly spiced and came with a tasty rocket, onion and pepper slaw. My companion plumped for the prawns, and couldn’t believe her luck when two huge shell-on prawns in a creamy garlic sauce were presented. I then had the piquant jerk chicken supreme main with sweet pepper and onion gravy. My companion had the tender drunken lamb and mash, to which she added some of their sweet yet fiery homemade hot sauce. We couldn’t manage dessert, so vowed to return to try the sticky toffee pudding we enviously spotted being served at the next table.
