In the old city centre of Bristol, just behind the historic St Nicholas Market, The Elephant is a stalwart city-centre restaurant and bar situated in a listed building on St Nicholas Street. Refurbished at the end of 2013, its ivory walls must have seen dozens of colourful scenes over the past 300 years. With sensational food, quality ales and wonderful wines, be it a light lunch, pub classics lavish dinner or private function, The Elephant is a gastropub with something to suit all.
Downstairs, The Elephant serves pub snacks like breaded monk fish tail served with garlic mayo and lemon, and sticky chicken wings and sour cream. You’ll also find pub classics like beer-battered hake, chips, three pea purée and tartare, the famous Elephant burger and 28-day-aged 8oz rib-eye steak with beef dripping chips and Béarnaise.
In the restaurant, expect sensational modern British food prepared by Rob Harris and his team. Starters such as chilled smoked haddock, potato salad and oyster cream, or perhaps English asparagus, devilled egg and Parmesan salad will take your fancy. Main courses are crafted but not overly complicated with dishes such as 12oz Hereford cross strip loin steak, bone marrow sauce, allium and carrots; or pan-roasted turbot, smoked bacon, duck egg omelette, broad beans and peas. Desserts are a delight, with many delicious choices: chocolate mousse, peanut brittle and beer ganache or Mess – strawberries, blueberries, chantilly and almond praline. Lastly, the traditional Sunday lunch features the best in local meats and bookings are essential.
All ingredients combine to create delicious handcrafted dishes, confidently cooked. Menus are changed for the seasons and adjusted subject to the availability of the best produce from the best suppliers. Best of all, you can wash it all down with a wine, cocktail, premium beer or craft ale such as their own Elephant Ale or Lord Almighty Yakima IPA.
The Elephant is an inspiring venue for celebrations, business functions, wedding receptions or private parties for up to 140 guests. The team can provide expert advice about every aspect of your event, from drinks and entertainment through to a bespoke handcrafted menu designed in conjunction with the head chef.
