Tucked away in a quiet corner of Clifton Village, you'll find family-run restaurant The Muset. This intriguing building can seat up to 120 diners and offers guests the opportunity to dine out of sight in one of the various nooks and crannies, or larger groups can enjoy the lively atmosphere in one of the more spacious areas.
Since 1987 The Muset has been serving a selection of modern European dishes to its loyal Clifton clientele. Exposed brick and cool contemporary decor creates a relaxed atmosphere that keeps diners coming back time and time again. The seasonally changing evening à la carte menu offers a delicious array of seafood, game and local meats with some delicious vegetarian additions too. Before you tuck into your starters, begin the experience with an 'overture' - rustic breads, in all shapes and sizes, and olives kick start the appetite and hint at the quality of what is to come.
To start you can sample the likes of locally smoked chicken and watercress salad, served with a medley of roasted sweet peppers and grain mustard dressing. Main courses are equally tempting, and the choice of around ten dishes makes deciding what to eat a tricky task. The king scallop and monkfish medley won the day for me - pan fried with coriander, garlic and baby leaf spinach and served with a three-pepper sauce, this was a dish of lively and rich flavours.
If seafood isn't your thing, opt for carved duck breast, medallion of pork loin or a grilled 9oz steak. Vegetarians are not overlooked and can enjoy dishes such as caramelised shallot tatin served with warm salad of artichoke, spinach and butter beans. Fries, new minted potatoes, wilted baby spinach or a rocket and Parmesan salad make the perfect accompaniment to your meal; and you must ensure you leave room for dessert, to indulge in sweets like apple and redcurrant creme brûlée or the exotic fruit and vanilla cheesecake served with mango coulis and fresh cream - simply delicious.
To accompany your food there are quality select wines available for purchase, but The Muset also operates a 'bring your own' policy with just a small corkage charge. At the weekend a reasonably priced lunch menu provides the ideal way to spend a leisurely afternoon, offering the chance to sample options from the à la carte menu as well as some fantastic extras. Paving the way where Bristol's restaurant scene has followed, The Muset is justifiably as successful as it has always been - discover it for yourself very soon.
