With the choice of so many eateries on Park Street, why switch off your autopilot to veer off the main drag?

Why? Because a dozen steps will take you to somewhere you wish you'd discovered ages ago, somewhere where you can savour the flavour, feel the virtue of vitamins and cleanse your conscience, all in one sitting. Liz Haughton, sister of Bordeaux Quay's Barny and Better Food Company's Phil, has donned her apron and taken hold of the Folk House Café with gusto. The results are spectacular. Not glamorous maybe, but who needs razzle-dazzle when your leek and potato pie tastes this good.

Wholesome, home-made and inexpensive food is what you'll find here. It's nearly all organic too (well, she is a Haughton), and what's not organic is likely to have been sourced in one of our neighbouring counties. So the food tastes great, is packed with goodness and served with environmental consideration to boot.

There are Café staples such as Adey's Farm quarter-pounders, veggie bubble and squeak and soup (we tried a delicious Somerset apple and parsnip). You'll also find tapas plates and pizza. The daily changing specials on our mid-November visit included the aforementioned leek and potato pie and Cajun-style pork and sausage jambalaya. In summer, lighter food can be enjoyed in the lovely terraced garden.

Whether you're popping in for coffee or having a meal, leave room for a cake. Our apple and cinnamon sponge rendered us speechless, not to mention replete. As for the chocolate brownies...

You may already be acquainted with the Bristol institution that is The Folk House. Maybe you've been to a gig or attended a course. Now you have another reason to go - just come for the food - it'll blow your 100% organic cotton socks off.
