Opposite Temple Meads station lies one of Bristol’s best-kept secrets. For anyone lucky enough to have eaten at Don Giovanni’s it will come as no surprise to read that their food is second to none. Head chef and owner Andy Firetto has dedicated over 20 years to this gem of a restaurant, creating a menu inspired by his Sicilian roots, his love of all Italian food, and his classical French training. The result is a collection of honest and delectable dishes that impress even the harshest of critics.

By candlelight we mulled over the extensive menu and enjoyed a bottle of the pinot grigio Delle Venezie 2001 (£13.95). Our starters of green shell mussels in bonne femme (mushrooms, garlic, white wine and cream), and an aubergine, mozzarella and tomato stack chosen from the specials board, were both exceptional and under £6. We were urged to take our time, and nothing was too much trouble. I was impressed by the presentation of my main course, gamberoni thermidore, which saw whole tiger prawns in a rich cheese, mustard and white wine sauce, with shrimps and fresh cream – as delicious as it was beautiful. My companion’s steak involtini was wrapped in Parma ham with tomato and basil, a genius combination of ingredients. After finding room for gloriously rich profiteroles served with creamy ice cream, we sipped cappuccinos and nibbled on amaretto biscuits.

For lunch Don Giovanni’s offers two courses from a special set menu for just £7.95. Choose from a mixture of pizzas and pasta dishes and a selection of starters or sweets. There is also a takeaway service available for nights when cooking and going out both seem like too much trouble.

Don Giovanni’s provides a thoroughly enjoyable evening in relaxed and pleasant surroundings. The service is excellent and the food exceptional.
