Although the county is often associated with traditional comfort food and fantastic roast dinners, Yorkshire’s foodie scene is constantly evolving and changing, with a great number of new and exciting restaurants, cafés, and bars opening. Meanwhile, well-established venues and chefs continue to impress through new and innovative menus.
We’ve compiled a list of some of our favourite venues from the latest edition of the Yorkshire Food & Drink Guide. All are suitable for a great range of occasions, from relaxed coffee meetings and brunch, to social dinners and fine dining.
LS6
As one of the longest running independent businesses in Leeds, LS6 is firmly established as a favourite among locals and visitors alike. We were particularly impressed by the coffee and the fantastic breakfast, which is all locally sourced and hailed as one of the best breakfasts in the city.
The food offering is varied, making LS6 a meeting point where you may enjoy drinks and a bite to eat at any time of day, as well as a fantastic range of creative events, exhibitions and performances. It’s also home to one of Leeds’ oldest jazz nights.
We visited The Copper Horse in Seamer for lunch, and would highly recommend it. It was warmly lit and cosy and we noted that the stylish venue with its copper fixtures would suit a variety of dining occasions.
The kitchen’s recent addition of a Bertha charcoal oven, which is used for cooking meat and fish at high temperatures, means that you can choose from a mouth-watering array of beautifully cooked specials including braised brisket of beef and rosemary-crusted rack of lamb.
Oozing character and offering a warm Yorkshire welcome, The Plough in Scalby is an intimate, comfy and social restaurant with lovely bedrooms for those who wish to stay the night. The Plough boasts a unique menu comprising both tapas dishes and big plates – perfect for those who like to share or wish to explore a bit more of the menu.
While we treated the tapas dishes like starters and enjoyed salt and pepper squid, and the grilled chilli and garlic prawns before our mains, we would definitely recommend visiting as a group and ordering a range of these small plates for the table.
As one of the leading restaurants in the Harrogate area, award-winning Norse offers something unique in the form of stunningly presented Nordic cuisine. Head chef Simon Jewitt took over last May and offers a choice between the full set menu and a shorter version.
In spring of 2017, Norse is due to move from its current location. The exciting new venue will offer a vastly improved experience for diners and is set to include more comfortable seating, climate control, even more wine served by the glass and a new menu format that will include a mixture of small plates and sharing dishes. This more social environment combined with the buzz of Norse’s impressive reputation is the perfect recipe for a memorable dining experience.
This impressive hotel is a focal point of the town of Malton (hailed as Yorkshire’s food capital), and has been welcoming guests for nearly 300 years. Today, you can choose to dine at either the two-AA-rosette-awarded Wentworth Restaurant or the new and more informal Malton Brasserie.
Wentworth Restaurant offers fabulously refined fine dining in traditional surrounds, while Malton Brasserie can be found in the atrium, where a colourful dining area decorated with Malton memorabilia and apple crates awaits. Ingredients at the Talbot Hotel are locally sourced, and herbs and vegetables are grown in the kitchen garden, so each mouthful truly is as fresh as it tastes.
