The 16th-century George & Dragon has a long history of outstanding hospitality and following extensive restoration, this historic establishment is once again up and running. It has a fresh, contemporary feel but has lost none of its rustic charm. Arbennig means special or exceptional in Welsh, and this family-run restaurant certainly is, having been named Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year in the 2015 Food Awards Wales and included in the Waitrose Good Food Guide for three years in a row, with the highest rating in Cardiff. Led by chef John Cook and his wife Ceri, Arbennig has been so successful that booking in advance is advisable.

The high standard of cuisine and service at Arbennig makes it a top choice for a special occasion, but guests are more than welcome to pop by for informal dining too. Ingredients are all locally sourced and prepared in-house from scratch by the chef for the seasonally rotating menus.

Ireland

Delicious roast lunches are served from noon until 5pm on Sunday, but you are also welcome to bring food in from the market. On a cold day it’s a great spot for sitting by the fire with a hot toddy to read the daily newspaper, and come 6 Nations match days you’ll struggle to find a more genuinely atmospheric place to enjoy a pint in Bristol.
