England is perfectly sandwiched between two excellent areas, Scotland and Wales. Both are known for their mountainous landscape, though the former is the land of many a glen and loch (that’s valleys and lakes), while the latter boasts plenty of Marilyns and Hewitts (by which we mean big and small hills). In the 2017 Michelin Guide, Wales became home to seven Michelin-starred venues, and Scotland retained its impressive 13. Of these, we would recommend popping along to one of the following…
Scotland
The Kitchin, Leith
In June 2006, The Kitchin – a new wave of Michelin-star quality dining – arrived on Leith’s shore, and has since taken the restaurant scene by storm, proving it has real star quality.
Martin Wishart, Leith
Although there are no musical instruments or actors involved, a meal at Martin Wishart could be likened to a symphony, where harmonious elements combine to present a stunning piece of work. It’s no wonder that this Michelin-starred chef’s creativity, vision and hard work have taken him on a remarkable journey far beyond Scotland’s shores.
Number One, Edinburgh
The Balmoral’s Michelin-starred restaurant, Number One, is recognised as providing one of Scotland’s greatest culinary experiences. Retaining its three AA rosettes in 2015/2016 for the 11th consecutive year, it is Number One’s dedication and passion to ensure immaculate service and outstanding Scottish cuisine that gives this culinary Edinburgh landmark its winning edge.
21212, Edinburgh
For Michelin-starred chef Paul Kitching, it’s been the culmination of his dream to set up 21212 and run it in his own inimitable style. Facilities include a 38-seater restaurant with open kitchen, a drawing room, private dining and four luxury bedrooms. The listed Georgian townhouse has four floors and is light, spacious and airy.
Wales
Walnut Tree, Abergavenny
This inn is a beacon of gastronomic excellence in South Wales, serving an idiosyncratic and much-loved mix of Italian and international dishes. With an informal atmosphere and unpretentious approach to cooking, this is a dining experience you won’t forget in a hurry.
Restaurant James Sommerin, Penarth
Recently named Best Restaurant in Wales and 24th in the UK by The Good Food Guide 2016, in just 18 months Restaurant James Sommerin has made a big impression on the Welsh dining scene, and is quickly becoming one of the hottest new restaurants in Wales.
