Afterwards, shimmy in the New Year to gypsy jazz band, La Vie En Rose at Cosy Club. It all starts with a selection of sharing tapas, including smoked salmon blinis, salt and pepper squid with lobster mayo and goat’s cheese and spinach croquettes. Main course options are mouth-watering – choose from slow-cooked Cherry Orchard pork belly, pan-roasted salmon fillet, roasted butternut squash risotto with spinach and topped with a perfectly poached egg, and 8oz Black Angus sirloin steak with grilled garlic tiger prawns, thick-cut chips and either a lobster and Prosecco sauce or classic Béarnaise sauce. The Metro named The Square home to the best New Year’s Eve in Bristol, and the guys running the show at The Square consistently prove they know how to throw a rip-roaring party. If theming is your game then look no further; past years have seen Speakeasy, Mardis Gras and Wonderland themes and this year guests are invited to a night at the circus. Yes, there will be circus performers – well, this is Bristol after all. You’ll have to get dressed up for this one and the code is black tie with a circus twist – we’re talking classic glamour with feathers, masks, sequins and the downright weird and wonderful. If you’re interested, make haste, as these tickets sell out fast. If you snaffle a VIP ticket this gets you early entry and a bottle of Perrier-Jouet Champagne. You can always stay the night at the adjoining Berkley Square hotel, so everything’s taken care of.

Get your Gatsby on for a New Year’s Eve roaring-twenties style. Clevedon Hall’s themed ball and supper promises to be a decadent, elegant and indulgent affair. There will be fireworks in the gardens at midnight, a cabaret and live bands to see you dancing through the night. The menu is pretty impressive too. Start with Cornish crab bisque to tempt the palate and then move onto the starter of chicory tarte Tatin with glazed Stilton and pear, walnut and watercress salad. Main course is a trio of organic lamb followed by a refreshing palate cleanser of Somerset cider and lime granita, and dessert is a heavenly chocolate delice with salted caramel, Grand Mariner ice cream and Oreo cookie crumble.

I won’t give it all away, but you’ll find cep, chocolate and passionfruit on the menu, as well as something delectable involving popcorn, cream and caramel (and that’s not the only sweet treat). Head out to the banks of the river at midnight and feel all of Bristol celebrating with you.
