Jamies Italian Princesshay

We have been hearing great things about the Christmas menu at Jamie’s Italian, so the good people at Princesshay  in Exeter invited us along to sample their festive fare and spread the word about how wonderful it is.

The Exeter restaurant is set in the heart of lively Princesshay,  so it’s the ideal spot for shoppers in need of refuelling. Inside, it boasts a contemporary interior with rustic touches here and there. Those seated on the ground floor can watch the chef team hard at work thanks to an open plan kitchen that floods the restaurant with energy and atmosphere. The second floor dining area enjoys views of the beautiful cathedral, offering a guests the opportunity to take a break from the hustle and bustle of December Christmas shopping.

Jamie Oliver prides himself on educating and training his staff to the highest possible standard, ensuring they can confidently prepare all dishes, execute cutting-edge cooking techniques expertly or offer suggestions about appropriate wines to pair with plates. Our waitress, Ingrid, was friendly and knowledgeable about the restaurant’s food and drink offerings. The drinks menu is populated by a broad range of wine, beer and cocktails, including Jamie’s own crafted beer. Ingrid recommended a bottle of Nero d’Avola to accompany our meal, a warm, smooth red that matched perfectly.

The festive feast menu at Jamie’s Italian comes highly recommended. We spent a few minutes deliberating over whether to share the antipasti plank or opt for the Italian nachos. In true epicurean style, we decided to give both a try! The plank brought together Tuscan fennel salami, Mortadella di Bologna, salami piccante, marinated and grilled seasonal vegetables, buffalo mozzarella, pecorino cheese, Jamie’s snappy music bread, olives and pickles, all served with homemade rosemary focaccia – it truly was a great sharing dish for any size party! The Italian Nachos were unbelievably delicious, consisting of crispy fried ravioli stuffed with mozzarella, ricotta and Bella Lodi, served with spicy Sicilian tomato sauce. We were blown away!

For mains we opted for truffled flash steak, chargrilled prime British beef steak served with whipped truffle butter and lemony red watercress, finished with extra virgin olive oil; and chicken al mattone, free-range Norfolk chicken breast, cooked under a brick and served with crispy San Daniele prosciutto, balsamic onions and pan juices. Both dishes were served with rosemary roast potatoes and roasted winter root veg. The steak was cooked to perfection, well-seasoned with a zesty hint of lemon. Although a steak knife was provided, the cut was so tender that I could’ve managed without.

For afters we enjoyed white chocolate cheesecake and the tangy lemon tart. If you have a sweet tooth you can’t go wrong with any of the desserts – they’re delicious and there are plenty of them!

The festive menu also comes with a glass of Prosecco and a Jamie’s Italian cracker to complete the festive fun. The restaurant is great for any size party and is also child friendly.

All-in-all, if you enjoy tasty, generously portioned food, top-class service and a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere, put Jamie’s Italian at the top of your foodie hit list (and definitely try the nachos!).
