british pie week

Everyone has a favourite pie, whether it’s sweet or savoury. From chicken and mushroom to sweet potato, whoever you ask, everyone has their own preference and everyone will pick a different one. Except maybe cricket pie. Yes, you read that right – cricket as in the insect. In a pie.

To celebrate British Pie Week, just when you thought you’d heard of every possible flavour combination, Pieminister has come up with the cricket pie.

The Hopper, available for a week from the 6 March is a Mexican-inspired cricket and black bean pie cooked in a rich tomato, chipotle chilli and sour cream sauce with fresh lime and coriander.

Pieminister hopes that The Hopper will challenge peoples’ preconceptions of what eating insects can be like and help raise awareness of the environmental issues surrounding sustainable sourcing for food production.

Jon Simon, Pieminister’s co-founder and MD says,

“70% of the world’s population (5 ½ billion people) see eating insects as the norm, yet many of us Brits would run a mile at the idea.  As a food business, it’s important we look ahead and explore how we can keep on creating great pies in a sustainable and responsible way.  British Pie Week is a chance for us to experiment with this future-food and put Britain’s taste buds to the test.  And hopefully demonstrate that a cricket pie can taste really good. So, give The Hopper a go this British Pie Week and see what you think.  (We think it’s delicious and that you’ll be genuinely surprised – we’re all cricket converts here at PMHQ now!)”

The Hopper is one of three specials on Pieminister’s Pie Week menu as they’re also bringing back two old favourites from heir recipe archives:

The Big Cheese: a mature English Cheddar, onion and buttered potato pie with a cream cheese & chive middle

The Guru: a British Lamb Dhansak curry pie made with Chana Dahl, spinach & chickpeas.

To celebrate pies in all their glory, Pieminister will be serving their extended pie menu – including these three specials and their gluten free pies, with mash for just £5.  This offer is available in any Pieminister café or restaurant for British Pie Week, from the 6 to 12 March.
