Rik Medlik Building, University of Surrey, Guildford, GU2 7XH

Operating within the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the Gu University of Surrey, Lakeside Restaurant and Coffee Shop offers a relaxed ambience that makes it the ideal place to catch up with friends, chat with colleagues or hold informal business meetings.

Lakeside’s popular coffee shop serves a whole host of handmade snacks that are perfect for a mid-morning refuel. There’s a range of savoury and sweet bites available, including vegan and gluten-free options, as well as hot and cold drinks – the barista-style coffee is a great pick-me-up. Over in the restaurant, the ambience is slightly more formal, but still with a friendly air. Here, head chef David Hill whips up a truly mouth-watering menu that changes by the month and, during term time, students are given the opportunity to learn from David and his team.

Made with local produce, the lunch menu typically begins with light appetisers such as mozzarella and summer pea salad and smoked barramundi with tangy mango salsa. Having whet your appetite, move on to a main of slow-cooked jerk chicken or tofu ramen in chilli and ginger, before treating yourself to one of the sweet, seasonal desserts. Lakeside is also available for private hire: whether you’re hosting a luxurious four-course banquet or a casual buffet, the team will be able to help you out.
