Whatley Manor

Just like a Michelin tyre, that time of the year when restaurants across Great Britain and Ireland are awarded Michelin stars rolled around again yesterday, and there was a lot for chefs across the country to celebrate at the special launch event that was held at The Hurlingham Club in London.

This year, one new three-star restaurant was announced, Sketch (The Lecture Room & Library), as well as four new two-star restaurants and 23 new one-star restaurants. In total, 187 restaurants are featured in the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2020, but it wasn’t all great news.

Alyn Williams at The Westbury

16 restaurants in total lost a star, including The Araki, after head chef and sushi master Mitsuhiro Araki returned to Japan, and Gidleigh Park in Chagford, Devon, after the departure of head chef Chris Simpson. A number of London restaurants such as Bonhams, Fera at Claridges, Hedone, and L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon also lost their stars as a result of closure.

International Director of the Michelin guides, Gwendal Poullennec, had this to say about what was the highest accolade of the night:

“Despite the obvious challenges being faced by the industry here in the UK, we are thrilled that this has been such a stellar year, and we have seen many first ventures opening and rapidly rising to success.

With three Michelin stars, Sketch joins four other restaurants at this prestigious level. This Pierre Gagnaire restaurant won its first star in 2005 and its second in 2013. Our inspectors judge the cooking here to be wonderfully complex and highly original, with each element of the meal excelling in terms of structure, composition and, above all, flavour.”

Other highlights of the night worth mentioning include Aimsir in Celbridge, which entered the guide for the first time with two Michelin stars, as well as La Dame de Pic in London, The Dining Room at Whatley Manor in Malmesbury, and The Greenhouse in Dublin, which were all promoted from one star to two stars at last night’s launch event.

The winners of the three Michelin awards for 2020 were also announced at the launch event. The Welcome & Service Award 2020 went to Team Bonwick at The Crown at Burchetts Green, the Sustainability Award 2020 went to Loam in Galway, and the Sommelier Award 2020 went to Jurica Gojevic at Adare Manor in Country Limerick.
