Eating organically has always been a much debated topic in food circles. What are the benefits? Why should I spend more on the same thing? How will it affect my health? Will I live ten years longer if I only eat organic food? That last one I am not sure we can give a definitive answer on, but we can try and tackle the others.  Aside from the price difference and apparent health benefits, what does it really mean to be organic? With a foodie generation that is currently obsessed with ‘clean eating’ and Instagramming their culinary successes, it’s easy to get swept up in what is and isn’t good for you.

Established in 1998, Woodruffs Café in Stroud is Britain’s first totally organic café; nothing goes through their kitchen doors without being strictly organic.  It’s safe to say that owner Holly Puttock knows what she’s doing when it comes to healthy, happy food. Holly began work at the café when if first opened under previous owners. In 2003 Holly bought the business and took it over, and was joined by head chef Erin Baker in 2006.

Holly has dedicated her life to organic and whole foods and has travelled extensively, which is reflected in the food at Woodruffs. At this café, it’s all about eating more ethically without compromising great taste (and it’s reasonably priced too). They use fresh organic produce and wholefoods from local suppliers as much as to fit with their sustainable values. With the exception of a few fish options (provided by a local family business), the menu is vegetarian as well as being as local and seasonable as possible.

The basic ethos behind organic food is that it hasn’t been in contact with any pesticides or chemicals and has been produced without any additives. We benefit from organic food because we aren’t putting any nasty extras in our bodies. It is often fresher than produce made using pesticides because it doesn’t contain any preservatives to make it last longer. It’s better for the environment too; organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion and generally use less energy, which creates a more holistic approach to farming. So there’s your answer to why you should swap some of your larder essentials for organic foods – it’s a small price to pay for environmental sustainability.
