Surrey foreward-header

We catch up with Barny Taylor and Kenneth Culhane about why Surrey is such a hotspot for first-rate dining.

Barny Taylor and Kenneth Culhane are the masterminds behind the success of The Dysart Petersham, and both share a love of Surrey. They’ve made it their home for 11 and 5 years respectively and truly appreciate the uniqueness of the area: ‘nothing has made us ever want to leave, thanks to the perfect combination of charm, space and pace of life in the countryside, while we also benefit from being so close to all the culture, diversity and opportunity of the capital city.’

Barny believes that the success of The Dysart Petersham as well as other Surrey venues is, in large part, thanks to their stellar location and choice of local suppliers, going on to say that ‘we even present our dishes on craftware made by a potter who studio boasts a stunning view of the Thames and Richmond Bridge.’ It’s this mix of fabulous views and countryside craftsmanship that makes the county such a honeypot for London entrepreneurs and diners alike.

Surrey has so much to offer in terms of produce and suppliers, all of whom feature heavily in the area’s restaurants.

‘Although here in Richmond we are close to London, the producers we are lucky enough to have relationships with are a true representation of the wonders that are being farmed from the top to the bottom of Surrey. We’re big fans of beer that’s brewed at the Hogs Back Brewery in Tongham, Beckett’s Gin, which is distilled with mint grown in Kingston, and rare-breed pork, which is reared in the gardens of a home just down the road from [The Dysart]. We strongly believe that passionate craftspeople like these deserve our support and custom, whether it be for use in the home kitchen or at restaurants.’

So go on, get out there and discover Surrey’s superb suppliers and restaurants for yourself. Need some dining inspiration? Find The Dysart Petersham’s profile, along with many others, in the latest Surrey Food & Drink Guide:
