MARCO PIERRE HEADEER

How does a slap-up half price dinner with a bit of bubbly courtesy of Marco Pierre White sound?

As a resident of Clevedon I am blessed in many ways. The Victorian seaside town has various celebrity connections; One Direction filmed ‘that’ video on ‘that’ pier, Broadchurch was filmed here, former Union J band member George Shelly and War and Peace actress Tuppence Middleton grew up in the town. With so many names around and about, it’s perhaps no surprise to find a big name chef in the neighbouring village of Yatton. This little South West village proudly hosts one of Marco Pierre White’s restaurants – the Godfather of modern cooking.

Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill can be found in the luxurious Cadbury Double Tree by Hilton hotel. You may have already heard of it, as it is known as the go-to restaurant for celebrations and special events in the area. Conveniently located, the hotel is just 13 miles and an easy half-an-hour drive from Bristol.

Like any good restaurant reviewer, I wasn’t going to take heed of rumours and hearsay, I was going to try out this restaurant myself and see what all the fuss was about.

The first thing to catch my attention as I drew close to the hotel was the canopy of beautiful, twinkling fairy lights that hang from the trees and the gazebo. Warmly welcomed at reception, I was taken through to the restaurant where I leisurely perused the menu over a glass of wine at the piano bar. Relaxing into the chilled-out environment, I noticed that the whole interior achieves that difficult task of combining effortless style and comfort with high-end dining. You feel like you are somewhere special without it being stuffy or pretentious.

A friendly member of the MPW team showed us to our table and we were lucky enough to be seated at one of their booths. Marco Pierre White restaurants are famous for their steaks and our waiter informed us that the restaurant source the majority of their fresh, seasonal produce from trusted suppliers in the South West.

My companion kicked off proceedings with the fritto misto – calamari and shrimps with tangy tartare sauce – while I indulged in a classic heart-warming starter of baked Camembert. This creamy, dreamy starter came with freshly baked and toasted sourdough, perfect for dipping, and juicy vine-ripened tomatoes. The main course was never in question. We both plumped for the fillet steak, which arrived perfectly cooked and was melt-in-the-mouth tender. Creamed cabbage and bacon was a luxurious side and really enhanced the flavour of the steak. It was a main course that didn’t last very long.

The wine list at MPW Steakhouse Bar & Grill is just as pleasing as the food offering. An extensive range provides plenty of choice, and reasonable prices mean that you can try out some new bins. We opted for a South African grape blend of chenin blanc and sauvignon. It was cool, crisp and saw us through our courses well. To be honest, we were fairly full after our main courses, but with fifty-per-cent off our meal surely it would be rude not to have a pudding. After a leisurely break and a bit of a chat (you are never rushed or hurried here) we decided to indulge our sweet tooth in a crème brulee and we conquered the chocolate brownie. Both were divine.
