The ever popular St Nicholas Market in the centre of the Old City has beaten off competition from markets from across the country to be named one of Britain’s best at an awards ceremony at Birmingham City Council House.

The Great British Market Awards saw markets battle it out to be crowned Britain’s best in the national competition run by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA).

St Nicholas Market won the Best Large Indoor Market category and was praised for its partnership work with schools and the council, including its annual young enterprise market. It was also praised for its excellent expanding food outlets and support of the Bristol Pound – cited as an outstanding success and an example for others to learn from.

Stacey Bartlett, markets and estates manager for Bristol City Council, said: “We are really proud to have won this award as recognition of the hard work and dedication of all of our traders and markets team.

“We have a huge variety of stall holders and traders, with something to appeal to everyone, and we are committed to offering opportunities to new start -ups and businesses.

The permanent indoor market buildings and outdoor stalls are home to the largest collection of independent retailers in the city offering a variety of quality crafts, giftware and food.

We spoke to Stacey to find out what exciting plans they have for 2016. As well as their eagerly anticipated night markets, this spring/summer they’ll be hosting an Italian car show, a large independent record fair, young entrepreneurs market and a series of flea markets.
