We were heartily welcomed as we arrived at The Crown Inn, which is located in the quaint village of Marston Montgomery. The Crown has many jewels in its crown, including a cosy oak-beamed bar, a relaxed dining room and seven comfortable bedrooms. Whilst homemade sandwiches and soup are served daily, we were there to sample the fine dinner menu for a bit of extra indulgence.

In the comfort of the bar, which offers four guest ales as well as lagers and a wide range of global wines, my companion and I ordered our meal. Shortly afterwards our attentive waiter led us to a candlelit table, where we were presented with appetising starters of smoked salmon with dressed salad, and homemade leek and potato soup with a warm, crusty roll. For the main course my partner chose a sumptuous slow-roasted belly pork with creamed potato, whilst I opted for the recommended (and absolutely delicious) Nile perch. Both were accompanied by seasonal vegetables and new potatoes. For dessert we shared a wonderfully light and citrusy homemade cheesecake, before retiring to the leather settee for coffees in front of the open fire – absolute bliss.
