Step inside Caddon View, a Victorian building of presence with fine views across the surrounding hills. It was originally built for the local doctor, but today you can expect first-class hospitality and a light, contemporary feel. The restaurant, which is open to residents and non-residents alike, is elegant and airy with an original stripped pine floor, and is set with white linen tablecloths, fresh flowers, candles at night, smart white crockery and fine glassware. The restaurant has space for 20 or so covers, without any sense of squeeze.

Dinner is informal but done in style: first, relax with a drink in the drawing room by the log fire, peruse the menu – three choices for each course – and enjoy some canapés. All the ingredients used are locally sourced and you can enjoy, for example, starters of smoked duck breast with plum chutney, or crayfish served on a bed of salad leaves with a sweet chilli, coriander and lime juice dressing – all are bound to get your appetite stirred for the main event ahead. For this, expect Borders lamb chops with celeriac and potato mash with baby glazed carrots and a rosemary gravy, pan-fried salmon with pak choi and a shallot sauce, or shoulder of Perthshire venison braised in red wine and cranberries and served with creamed potatoes. For dessert, how about home-grown plum crumble or a delicious vanilla upside down cheesecake; or if you’re in a wicked mood, try the indulgent chocolate pots.

The food at Caddon View is full of flavour and cooked with care, meaning it’s very fresh, very flavoursome, good for you, and served with style in a really relaxing way. It is complemented by a very carefully selected wine list, which includes Champagnes, dessert wines and wines by the glass. With beautifully-appointed accommodation, a stunning location and mouth-watering breakfast and dinner menus, Caddon View is certainly worth a visit – be sure to book ahead.
