Simon Gueller - Box Tree

After running and maintaining the Michelin starred Box Tree restaurant in Ilkley for three years now, and also obtaining a Michelin star at each of my previous two restaurants in Yorkshire, it’s a pleasure to be associated with this year’s Leeds and York Food and Drink guide.

Leeds and York’s dining scene has become an increasingly more vibrant and exciting place, with consumers obviously enjoying a wide variety of foods and demanding top quality from their chosen restaurants’ menus.

The distinguished gastronomic heritage of Leeds can be traced back to 1857 with the opening of Leeds Kirkgate Market, now the largest indoor and outdoor market in the country which sells food products from every corner of the globe as well as some of Yorkshire’s best meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. Real Yorkshire produce is something to be proud of and both Leeds and York have become a centre of excellence from which restaurants can draw endless inspiration.  

I’ve always prided myself on the selection of my ingredients; using local suppliers and choosing nothing but the freshest produce from all over the county, as well as further a field, has allowed me to continue creating the highest standard of cuisine all our customers have become accustomed to.

This year has been particularly exciting for me, as our newest venture, Box Tree Events is now well and truly established. As executive chef at the prestigious Yorkshire venues Harewood House and Denton Hall, the collaboration now allows for both corporate and private events with top class catering to take place either at these venues, or at any other venue the customer chooses. 

Since the renovation of the Box Tree restaurant in 2004, my wife Rena and I have never looked back, winning and retaining a Michelin star, gaining three coveted AA Rosettes from the AA Guide who also recognize us as having one of the top wine lists in the country.

For me fine food is a love and a passion, and I am constantly thrilled with the quality of cuisine both Leeds and York are continuing to produce. This year looks set to be full of even more possibilities and challenging ventures at the Box Tree and for me there’s never been a more exciting time.

I look forward to entertaining you all in the future, and until then I have no doubt you will all enjoy the feast, which is dining in Leeds and York.
